“Lyric Evaluation” Exercise

Jump start my Kaleidoscope Heart,
love to watch the colors fade.
They may not make sense
but they sure as hell made me.
I won’t go as a passenger,
no waiting for the road to be laid;
though I may be going down,
I’ll take in flame over burning out.

Compare where you are
to where you want to be
and you’ll get nowhere.

These lyrics are an excerpt (specifically the bridge) taken from Sara Bareilles’ song Uncharted. While the subject of this song definitely comes from a place of “lostness”, the mood is fairly upbeat. Ultimately the intention of the song is to push forward, out of the “lostness”. The mood captures an emotion of optimism over pessimism despite the fact that the lyrics indicate “this territory is uncharted”. Perhaps my favorite part of the song (the final bit of the bridge before leading back into the chorus) is the most effective example of the mood. Bareilles is challenging herself and her audience to stop wasting time wishing things were different and to change their course, because the wishing doesn’t accomplish anything.

I believe the mood is captured entirely in this video. Other musicians are lip syncing to the official music video for the song and Sara is only shown a few times throughout. The mood and message of the video mirrors the song’s mood/message because the participants are clearly enjoying themselves, while throughout the video Sara sends a message in a bottle and by the end of the video she gets her answer.
