object Anne Shirley
text “I’m an unfortunate romantic”
It’s easy for me to connect this object (or character, rather) with the chosen text. This statement might as well have been said by Anne herself.
“I’d like to add some beauty to life,” said Anne dreamily. “I don’t exactly want to make people KNOW more… though I know that IS the noblest ambition… but I’d love to make them have a pleasanter time because of me… to have some little joy or happy thought that would never have existed if I hadn’t been born.”
― L.M. Montgomery, Anne’s House of Dreams
Another aspect of the gap between Anne Shirley and the text excerpt that can be easily filled is the language used. My choice to say “unfortunate” almost mirrors the dramatic, over-embellished way that Anne Shirley speaks to Marilla and others in the early books. By the end of the series Anne has found her voice and though she is still a romantic, she doesn’t rely on melodrama to capture an audience.
